Home MenuWIC: Breastfeeding Support
We know that every family’s feeding journey is unique. WIC is here to support you however you choose to feed your baby—whether that’s exclusive breastfeeding, combination feeding, or formula feeding. Our goal is to make sure you feel supported, confident, and cared for every step of the way.
WIC supports the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendation for exclusive breastfeeding for about the first 6 months, with continued breastfeeding for 2 years or longer as mutually desired by the mother and baby.
At WIC, we encourage breastfeeding. All WIC staff are trained to promote breastfeeding and provide the guidance, reassurance, and encouragement mothers and infants need for success.
Breastfeeding Support at WIC
WIC provides support in person, by phone, and through text, so you can connect with us in the way that works best for you.
We offer prenatal education about breastfeeding and check in after your baby is born to help with feeding. Every WIC staff member is trained in breastfeeding support and ready to help you along your journey.
Peer Counseling Program
Our WIC Peer Counselor Program provides personalized, mom-to-mom support throughout your breastfeeding journey. Peer counselors are mothers who have breastfed their own babies and are trained to help support you with encouragement and practical advice.
Peer counselors check in regularly to provide:
- Education and encouragement
- “How-to” help during pregnancy and after your baby’s birth
- Answers to questions and concerns
- Tips and guidance to help feeding get off to a positive start
Breast Pumps
WIC can help you get set up with a breast pump that fits your needs. We can:
- Assist you in exploring your insurance pump options
- Loan hospital-grade pumps when medically necessary
- Provide manual hand pumps for short-term or occasional use
If you’re returning to work or school, WIC is here to help you continue breastfeeding while away from your baby—with both equipment and ongoing support.
